Privacy Policy
Effective date: January 1, 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how Michigan Legal Publishing Ltd. ("MLP," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and handles information when you use LexFed (www.lexfed.com). We have designed LexFed to collect as little data as possible.
1. Information We Collect
Server Logs
Our hosting infrastructure automatically records standard web server logs, which may include your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, pages visited, and the date and time of your request. These logs are used solely for security monitoring, debugging, and infrastructure management. We do not use server logs to build user profiles or track individual behavior over time.
Session Cookies
LexFed uses a single session cookie (_lexfed_key) that is technically
necessary to operate the site. This cookie enables CSRF protection and maintains the
state of your browser session (such as your selected display theme). It contains no
personally identifiable information and is not used for tracking or advertising.
The cookie expires when you close your browser or when the session times out.
2. What We Do Not Collect
We do not:
- Require account registration or collect names, email addresses, or passwords
- Use third-party analytics services (e.g., Google Analytics)
- Use advertising networks or tracking pixels
- Sell, rent, or share your data with third parties for marketing purposes
- Use fingerprinting or other cross-site tracking techniques
3. AI-Generated Summaries (Anthropic)
When you request a Plain English or ELI5 summary of a legal provision, the text of that legal provision (sourced from the public-domain USC or CFR) is transmitted to Anthropic, PBC to generate a summary via the Claude API. We do not transmit any information about you — only the statutory or regulatory text you requested summarized.
Anthropic's handling of API data is governed by Anthropic's Privacy Policy . Generated summaries are cached on our servers to avoid repeated API calls for the same provision and level.
4. How We Use Information
The limited information we collect is used only to:
- Operate, maintain, and improve the LexFed service
- Diagnose technical problems and ensure security
- Comply with applicable legal obligations
5. Data Retention
Server logs are retained for a limited period for operational purposes and then deleted. Session cookies are ephemeral and expire with the session. Cached AI summaries are retained on our servers indefinitely and may be regenerated when underlying legal text is updated.
6. Children's Privacy
LexFed is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children.
7. Links to Other Sites
LexFed may link to external government sources (uscode.house.gov, ecfr.gov, etc.). These sites are not operated by MLP and are governed by their own privacy policies.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised policy on this page with an updated effective date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
