Terms of Service
Effective date: March 15, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of LexFed™ (www.lexfed.com), a service operated by Michigan Legal Publishing Ltd. ("MLP," "we," "us," or "our"). By accessing or using LexFed you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
1. Description of Service
LexFed is a free online reference tool that aggregates and displays text from the United States Code (USC) and the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), both of which are works of the United States federal government in the public domain. LexFed also provides AI-generated plain-language summaries of legal provisions powered by the Anthropic Claude API.
2. Accuracy of Legal Text
The legal text displayed on LexFed is provided for informational purposes only and may not reflect the most recent amendments, corrections, or official codifications. USC text is sourced from the Office of the Law Revision Counsel (OLRC) bulk XML files; CFR text is sourced from the eCFR XML bulk download provided by the National Archives. While we endeavor to keep data current, there may be lag between official updates and what appears on this site.
For all legal, regulatory, compliance, or transactional purposes, you must verify the current, official text against authoritative government sources, including:
- uscode.house.gov — official USC (OLRC)
- www.ecfr.gov — official eCFR (National Archives)
- www.govinfo.gov — official CFR print edition
Your use of LexFed and any reliance on content displayed on this site is entirely at your own risk.
3. Not Legal Advice
LexFed does not provide legal advice. Nothing on this site — including the displayed legal text, AI-generated summaries, cross-references, or any other content — constitutes legal advice, creates an attorney-client relationship, or should be relied upon as a substitute for consultation with a licensed attorney. Laws vary by jurisdiction and circumstance. Always consult a qualified attorney before taking action based on any legal provision.
4. AI-Generated Summaries
Plain English and ELI5 summaries are generated by the Anthropic Claude API and are automatically cached. AI-generated text is inherently imperfect and may contain errors, omissions, or oversimplifications. These summaries are illustrative only and do not constitute an accurate legal interpretation of the underlying provision. Do not rely on AI summaries for any legal, compliance, or regulatory purpose.
5. Intellectual Property
LexFed™ is a trademark of Michigan Legal Publishing Ltd. The USC and CFR text displayed on LexFed are works of the United States federal government and are in the public domain. The LexFed platform software, design, site structure, data processing, and any original content (including AI-generated summaries as a compilation) are owned by or licensed to Michigan Legal Publishing Ltd. and are protected by applicable copyright and intellectual property laws.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

MLP DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR FREE OF HARMFUL COMPONENTS.
10. Limitation of Liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, MLP AND ITS OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, EMPLOYEES, AND AGENTS SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO YOUR USE OF LEXFED, INCLUDING DAMAGES ARISING FROM RELIANCE ON ANY CONTENT DISPLAYED ON THE SITE, EVEN IF MLP HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. MLP'S TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ANY AND ALL CLAIMS ARISING FROM THESE TERMS SHALL NOT EXCEED FIFTY DOLLARS ($50.00).
11. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless MLP and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of or in any way connected with your access to or use of LexFed, your violation of these Terms, or your reliance on any content displayed on this site.
12. Binding Arbitration and Class Action Waiver
Please read this section carefully. It affects your legal rights.
Any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to these Terms or your use of LexFed that cannot be resolved informally shall be resolved by binding individual arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association ("AAA") under its Consumer Arbitration Rules (or, if those rules are inapplicable, its Commercial Arbitration Rules), as modified by these Terms. The arbitration shall be conducted in Kent County, Michigan. Judgment on the arbitration award may be entered in any court having jurisdiction.
BY AGREEING TO ARBITRATION, YOU AND MLP EACH WAIVE THE RIGHT TO A TRIAL BY JURY.
CLASS ACTION WAIVER: You and MLP each agree that any dispute resolution proceeding will be conducted only on an individual basis and not as a class, consolidated, or representative action. You waive any right to participate in a class action lawsuit or class-wide arbitration. If a court finds that this class action waiver is unenforceable for any particular claim, that claim shall be severed and litigated in court while any remaining claims proceed in arbitration.
Nothing in this section prevents either party from seeking emergency injunctive or other equitable relief in a court of competent jurisdiction to prevent irreparable harm, or from bringing an individual claim in small claims court where jurisdiction is proper.
13. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Michigan, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles. To the extent any dispute is not subject to arbitration, you consent to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located in Kent County, Michigan.

These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and MLP regarding LexFed and supersede all prior agreements or understandings relating to the subject matter hereof.
16. Severability
If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, that provision will be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable, and the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
17. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will post the revised Terms on this page with an updated effective date. Your continued use of LexFed after any changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
